The University of Ghana hereby, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of Dean, University of Ghana Medical School, College of Health Sciences, to take effect from 1st August 2025.
POSITION: Dean, University of Ghana Medical School
REPORTING TO: Provost, College of Health Sciences
Objectives of the College of Health Sciences: The College shall advance the objectives of each of its constituent Units by these specific objectives, to:
(a) Promote health through education, research and service;
(b) Provide promotive, preventive and curative services to meet the health needs of the nation and the global community through world class excellence in teaching, research and dissemination of knowledge;
(c) Produce highly qualified and competent health professionals and medical scientists; and,
(d) Promote development of sustainable health programmes.
The University of Ghana Medical School comprises the following Departments:
Department of Anaesthesia
Department of Anatomy
Department of Chemical Pathology
Department of Child Health
Department of Community Health
Department of Haematology
Department of Medical Biochemistry
Department of Medical Microbiology
Department of Medical Pharmacology
Department of Medicine and Therapeutics
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Department of Pathology
Department of Physiology
Department of Psychiatry
Department of Radiology
Department of Surgery
DUTIES
• The Dean is responsible for providing leadership to the School and for maintaining and promoting efficiency and good order in accordance with the policies and procedures prescribed by the University Act and Statutes, or as may be determined by the Council, the Academic Board and the School Management Committee.
• The Dean is to ensure that the approved programmes and functions of the School are duly carried out by members of the School.
• The Dean is also responsible for the general administration of the School in respect of human, financial and material resources within the general framework of University policy.
Qualification Required & Experience
The successful candidate must:
• Be of professorial status from an academic/research institution or a person from industry eligible for that position.
• Be capable of providing academic leadership especially in the area of teaching, research and extension in the relevant disciplines.
• Provide evidence of managerial and administrative leadership and capacity to promote a collegial working environment in the School.
• Demonstrate capacity to attract funding for research and development.
• Have the vision and the drive to oversee the growth and development of the School.
• Be in good standing with a Medical Regulatory Authority
SALARY
Attractive with fringe benefits including market premium, rent, security and responsibility allowance.
TENURE
The Dean must be able to hold office for a period of three years on terms and conditions recommended by the Appointments Board, before reaching the statutory retirement age of 60 years, and may be eligible for re-appointment for a further term of up to three years.
