Winrock International, one of the implementing organizations for the USAID/ Ghana Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (GWASH) Project is looking to hire a short-term Communications Assistant.
General Description of Role
The Communications Assistant will be responsible for providing support on a few critical and innovative components of the Ghana Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (GWASH) Project.
He/she will assist in the production of communications and promotional content from the Ghana WASH Project for the projects implementing partners (Relief International, Winrock International, and ADRA). This includes developing success stories of the project which can be used on the implementing partners websites, for Public Private Partnerships (PPP) and Behavior Change Communications (BCC) purposes and for various donor and stakeholder reports. He/she will also conduct field trips to support monitoring and mapping of water and sanitation facility construction, and other duties as required.
The major deliverables for the Communications Assistant during this period of employment will be to assist the Communications Manager in field visits, reporting and research and preparing media content to develop two Lessons Learned documents during the project extension period - one on the GWASH Projects various innovative activities (Hybrid Community-Led Total Sanitation strategy, manual drilling and boreholes repairs), and one on the projects collaborative work with local NGOs.
The Assistant will also complete a series of field trips to project sites to verify water and sanitation facility construction and usage through enumeration (household latrines), photo documentation, and capturing GPS coordinates.
The Assistant will use this data for updates for the projects water and sanitation databases and to submit trip reports for troubleshooting issues as they arise in the field.
The Assistant would work with the Hardware Manager, Water Coordinator, M&E Specialist and fieldbase staff to regularly update the water and sanitation databases and to ensure data is accurate.
Main Responsibilities
• Assist the Communications Manager to write success stories and lessons learned documents for the GWASH Project from available reports, interviews with staff and first-person discussions upcountry with beneficiaries who have been impacted by the GWASH project activities.
• Work with field-based staff and Communications Manager to develop a verification plan to travel upcountry to monitor and capture data on water and sanitation facilities.
• Enumerate household latrines, take photos of work in progress and completed facilities in the field while capturing GPS coordinates of these pictures.
• Conduct proper naming and filing of GWASH project photos and file on the shared drive with their respective GPS coordinates.
• Assist the Communications Manager in the development of materials such as posters, brochures and flyers about the GWASH project.
• Assist in the development of project concept papers and presentations to various stakeholders by editing and providing photos to suit specific concept papers, proposals and presentations.
• Create and maintain press releases for events and happenings under the GWASH project.
• Assist Communications Manager in the development of BCC materials targeted towards low literacy populations.
• Assist the Public Private Partnership Coordinator in the development of materials to encourage collaboration with successful businesses in the Ghanaian Private Sector.
• Assist M&E Specialist in the documentation, presentation and distribution of information to stakeholders, including data from the field, lessons learned and best practices.
Other tasks as required for the success of the Ghana WASH Project as determined by the Chief of Party, Deputy Chief of Party and Communications Manager.
Qualification Required & Experience
Candidate for this position should have at least a Bachelors Degree with at least 3 year professional experience in the field of Journalism or in Creative Marketing Disciplines.
• Demonstrable experience in creative marketing disciplines (creative writing, photography, graphic design, journalism, advertising).
• Demonstrated experience using graphic art software.
• Excellent command (both verbal and written) English.
• Experience in living or working in a developing country and must possess cross-cultural sensitivity.
• Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Ability to think critically and creatively.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including patience, diplomacy, willingness to listen and respect for colleagues. Must be capable of working both individually and as part of a team.
