Responsibilities and Duties

The Director of Legislative Drafting is the Head of the Legislative Drafting Division of the Attorney-General's Department. The Division is responsible for the preparation and drafting of substantive and subsidiary legislation and for advising on the overall legislative agenda of Government. Reporting directly to the Attorney-General, the Director of Legislative Drafting is responsible for:

•   Overseeing the general administration and management of the Legislative Drafting Division;
•   Preparing annual work programmes in keeping with the Government's legislative Agenda;
•   Drafting Bills and Statutory Instruments for approval by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice
•   Undertaking research on legislation and legal issues and preparing briefs and reports for the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice
•   Reviewing areas for legislative action and making his/her findings available to the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.
•   Undertaking consultations with ministries, departments and agencies in furtherance of the objective of reviewing areas for legislative action
•   Maintaining a digest of all laws amended, drafted and enacted
•   Representing the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice on statutory bodies on issues relating to the drafting of new laws and-amendments to existing laws; and
•   Performing such other related duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   The successful candidate must be a lawyer with not less than twelve (12) years standing at the Ghana Bar and a minimum of five years practical experience in legislative drafting.
•   A Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Legislative Drafting will be an advantage.
•   He or she must also have excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills and must be knowledgeable in the use of information and communication technology (ICT) tools. The nature of work at the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General's Department demands that the successful candidate must also be a team player.
