POSITION: CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST/COUNSELLOR
REPORTING TO: DIRECTOR, CAREERS AND COUNSELLING CENTRE
ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF GHANA CAREERS & COUNSELLING CENTRE
The University of Ghana Careers and Counselling Centre was set up in November 1970 as the Career Advice Centre with the mission to assist students in formulating and achieving personal, education and career goals. With time, the Centre’s increasing role in counselling called for a name change to the Counselling and Placement Centre in 1977. The name was changed again in 2016 to Careers and Counselling Centre to reflect the all-encompassing role of the Centre.

DUTIES
The Counsellors duties will include the following:
• To counsel students with the aim of helping them to meet their academic and career goals
• To assist lecturers and course advisers in setting and achieving academic targets
• To evaluate existing policies and programs, identify areas that inhibit student development and make recommendations for management consideration
• To refer students with special educational needs to appropriate specialists and programs
• To periodically monitor and evaluate the University’s counselling program.
• To prepare and submit required periodic reports
• To address any other issues assigned by the Director which may sometimes require visits to other campuses of the University

The successful candidates must have the ability to offer general counselling and must have expertise in some of the following areas of counselling:
• Group Counselling
• Greif Counselling
• Career Counselling
• Academic Counselling
• Clinical Counselling
• Psycho-pathological Counselling
• Family Therapy
• Pastoral Counselling
• Conflict Resolution
• Rehabilitation Counselling
• Crisis Counselling
Qualification Required and Experience
Applicants should possess a good first degree and a masters degree in any of the following areas, with a minimum of two (2) years relevant post-qualification work experience:
• Clinical Psychology
• Psychology
• Pastoral Care and Counselling
• Guidance and Counselling
• Or the equivalent of any of the above from a recognized Institution
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
The appointment shall normally be for six years, the first two years of which shall be regarded as probation period. The appointment shall be reviewed before the end of the sixth year and may normally be renewed for a period of up to three (3) years at a time.
