International Justice Mission is seeking a skilled Accountant with a desire to use his or her abilities to support IJM’s fight against forced labor trafficking of children in Ghana. The Accountant will manage the field office’s daily cash flow, provide general finance-related service to office personnel, and ensure that the entire office meets IJM’s high standards of financial responsibility and stewardship. This position is based in Accra, Ghana and reports to the Field Office Director of IJM Ghana.
Responsibilities
Finance Set-up for New Field Office
Liaise with HQ Finance to:
• Establish internal controls and procedures based on IJM Field Office Finance Manual and other policy documents;
• Develop, implement and maintain finance forms for cash advances, payments to vendors, expense reports, etc.;
• Assist with IJM Ghana’s registration;
• Identify statutory reporting requirements, establish accounts with appropriate government agencies for remittance of payroll withholdings and employer contributions;
• Establish the IJM Ghana bank account;
• Establish petty cash fund and procedures for handling and safeguarding cash;
• Set up general ledger using QuickBooks Online;
• Train employees on finance policies and procedures.
Financial Processing & Reporting
• Review all finance forms for validity, accuracy, and completeness prior to approval, process and record payments daily;
• Ensure that expenses are allocated to appropriate projects and that expense accruals and/or prepaid expenses are recorded as appropriate;
• Administer and safeguard petty cash fund, keeping petty cash log up to date and ensuring that all cash transactions are conducted in accordance with IJM policies;
• Review time sheets, allocate wages to appropriate projects, calculate salary deductions and withholdings, ensure salaries and remittances to government agencies are completed timely;
• Perform month-end closing procedures, prepare monthly finance packet to be sent to HQ;
• Prepare and submit reports to government agencies as required for taxes, pension, medical insurance, etc.;
• Prepare reports comparing budget with actual expenditures of the field office;
• Manage asset inventory, periodically reconcile with HQ asset ledger;
• Respond to inquiries from HQ Finance and other parties;
• Provide effective, timely and responsive support, service and training to field office personnel.
Financial Stewardship
• Encourage good stewardship and cost effectiveness among all staff at all times;
• Ensure financial compliance with any donor grants;
• Facilitate audits conducted or mandated by HQ, the government, or funding agencies; follow through on any audit exceptions;
• Ensure timely renewal of business registration/permits;
• Perform other duties as assigned by Field Office Director.
Qualification Required & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree and Certified/Chartered Accountant credentials;
• At least three years’ experience in accounting and financial management;
• Excellent people skills, demonstrated through collaborating with and supporting colleagues in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic organization;
• Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Excel and accounting software, preferably QuickBooks;
• NGO work experience preferred but not required; and
• Fluent in written and spoken English.
