The Director-General is the Chief Executive of the Council and is responsible for developing and executing the Council's programmes and projects, and for the efficient and effective management of the resources of the Council, financial, human and material.

The successful candidate will:

•   Be responsible for setting and implementing the agenda within the Council's broad strategic plan, initiating new directions in scientific Research and Development (R&D) and protecting the integrity of the Council's processes.
•   Oversee the effective implementation of the process of transforming the CSIR into a semi-commercial research institution as part of the Council's strategic plan.
•   Mobilise R&D funding and establish effective linkages with relevant institutions and agencies within and outside the CSIR for the implementation of programmes.
•   Oversee the transfer of the results of research in science and technology to relevant institutions and user agencies.
•   Perform any other duties as the Council may prescribe from time to time.

Qualification Required & Experience

The ideal person inter alia must:

•   Be a holder of a PhD degree or its equivalent in the relevant areas of the Council's mandate.
•   Be a distinguished and outstanding Research Scientist of national and inter¬national repute, with substantial research output and experience in R&D.
•   Have proven leadership and management abilities to manage a scientific institution, with at least 12 years management experience in top management position
•   Have creative vision and drive, and be capable of translating Council's strategic plan into strategic decisions and action programmes.
•   Have proven ability to organise, direct and co-ordinate activities within a large research system, and to motivate project leaders to combine research excellence with cost effectiveness and relevance.
•   Have the ability to interact with top management in other institutions and agencies.
•   Have good business sense and strong resource mobilisation skills, and be capable of attracting funding from internal and external sources to support R&D activities.
Possess excellent inter-personal and communication skills, to inspire research and support staff to give of their best.
•   Have mature and sober judgment.

Be capable of serving a full four-year term (for internal applicants) and five-year term (for external applicants) before attaining the compulsory retiring age of 60 years.
