Job Vacancy For Director of Public Prosecutions At Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department



Duties and Responsibilities

•   The Director of Public Prosecutions is the Head of the Prosecutions Division of the Attorney-General’s Department and is thus the frontline person who undertakes prosecution in the name and on behalf of the Attorney-General. Reporting directly to the Attorney-General, the Director of Public Prosecutions is responsible for:
•   Advising the Attorney-General on matters relating to the administration of the Criminal Justice System of Ghana;
•   Preparing and conducting proceedings under the Criminal and Other offences Act and other criminal statutes, including-
•   assessing available evidence and advising investigators as to the adequacy of evidentiary material;
•   seeking advice as to the appropriateness or otherwise of guilty pleas to lesser charges;
•   liaising with other agencies of state such the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO);
•   Promote appropriate standards of practice by State Attorneys and other public prosecutors duly appointed under the Law Officers Act;
•   Implement effective systems of prosecution so as to maintain the rule of law and contribute to a fair and equitable administration of criminal justice and the effective protection of citizens against crimes.
•   Supervise and oversee the work of all state attorneys in the Prosecutions Division and in the Regions;
•   Advise all Government Departments and Agencies on criminal matters
•   Provide legal opinion on and handle cases relating to Mutual Legal Assistance and Extradition;
•   Formulate and keep under review the public prosecution policy of Government;
•   Ensure effective management and performance of the Prosecutions Division; and
•   Perform any other functions that the Attorney-General may assign to him/her.

Qualification Required & Experience

•   The successful candidate must be a lawyer with not less than twelve (It) years standing at the Ghana Bar with a proven track record of law practice as a criminal defense attorney or a public prosecutor. A postgraduate degree in criminal law or criminology will be an added advantage. A deep knowledge of Ghana’s criminal justice system is required.
•   Additionally, the successful candidate must possess a high degree of objectivity and moral integrity. He or she must have the ability to analyse legal factual situations and present arguments clearly and cogently.
•   He or she must have excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills and must be knowledgeable in the use of information and communication technology (ICT) tools. The nature of work at the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department demands that the successful candidate must also be a team player.
