Position Title: Health, Safety & Environment Inspector
Report Directly To: Health, Safety & Environment Manager

Job Purpose

• Ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals present in the bustling market environment.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Conduct HSE Inspections: Perform regular and comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) inspections of the Market Complex. Identify potential hazards, unsafe practices, and non-compliance with HSE policies and regulations.
• Risk Assessments: Conduct risk assessments specific to the market complex, focusing on the diverse activities and potential hazards present in the market environment. Provide detailed risk evaluation reports and recommend appropriate risk mitigation measures.
• Incident Reporting and Investigation: Investigate and report on incidents, accidents, and near-misses that occur within the market complex. Determine the root causes of incidents and propose corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
• Monitor HSE Compliance: Monitor and enforce compliance with HSE policies, procedures, and regulations within the market complex. Collaborate with market staff, traders, and vendors to promote safety awareness and adherence to HSE standards.
• HSE Training and Awareness: Assist in conducting HSE training sessions for market staff, traders, and vendors. Raise awareness on HSE best practices, emergency procedures, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Emergency Preparedness: Support the development and implementation of emergency response plans for the market complex. Coordinate emergency drills and ensure that stakeholders are well-prepared to respond to potential emergencies.
• Contractor Safety Management: Review and assess the HSE plans of contractors working within the market complex. Ensure that contractors comply with safety standards and guidelines while executing their projects.
• Environmental Management: Monitor waste management practices and environmental impacts within the market complex. Advise on sustainable practices to promote environmental responsibility.
• Recordkeeping and Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of HSE inspections, incident reports, risk assessments, and other HSE-related activities.
• Collaborate with Market Stakeholders: Work closely with the HSE Manager, market staff, traders' associations, and vendors to foster a safety culture and encourage continuous improvement in HSE practices.
• HSE Communication: Participate in HSE meetings and communicate HSE-related updates and initiatives to all market stakeholders.
• Continuous Improvement: Continuously seek opportunities to improve HSE standards, practices, and protocols within the Market Complex.

Qualification & Experience Required

• A Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Hygiene or related discipline
• At least two (2) years of relevant post-degree qualification work experience

• Self-motivated goal-oriented personality with strong communication, mobilization and interpersonal skills
• Preparedness to work at week-ends and over-time to achieve set goals
