Description Of Job

Location:  Sekondi-Takoradi, with occasional travels to Accra
Duration:  One Year Contract- Renewable on Annual Basis upon Satisfactory Performance

Reports To: Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion Specialist, Accra

Background:
CHF International is seeking a Program Officer for the implementation of key activity components of the CHF International program “Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene for Urban Poor (WASH-UP)” funded by USAID.  The program will provide targeted technical and organizational capacity building and funding to local intermediaries to increase access to improved water and sanitation infrastructure, and promote better hygiene.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion Officer will, together with the Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion Specialist,:

•  Monitor Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion activities in program communities
•  Work closely with households and landlords to improve water and sanitation-related behaviours
•  Give hands on user-education and support to beneficiaries of house latrines
•  Develop latrine user guide/manuals for use in households
•  Work closely with school health coordinators under the SHEP program
•  Strengthen and support school health committee as part of the SHEP program
•  Monitor the implementation of school hygiene education in schools as part of the SHEP program
•  Assist the water and sanitation boards to promote hygiene in schools, house-holds and public places
•  Work closely with sub-metro Environmental Health Unit to promote water and sanitation-related behavior change in communities
•  Supervise and monitor the work of local Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion NGOs
•  Collaborate with other CHF staff to ensure smooth implementation of the WASH-UP program
•  Assist in the training of CBOs, local NGOs, latrine caretakers, water vendors in water and sanitation-related issues
•  Write reports and success stories on implementation of the Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion component of the WASH-UP program.
•  Undertake any other activities that may be assigned by the Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion Specialist

Qualification Required & Experience

Qualification and experience:
The Hygiene & Sanitation Promotion Officer should posses the following educational and job qualifications:

•  At least a degree or equivalent certificate in public, community or environmental health
•  At least three years experience in working with water and sanitation related issues
•  Conversant with the national water and sanitation policy
•  Conversant with urban water and sanitation issues
•  Must have worked with an NGO or institution engaged in promoting water, sanitation and hygiene interventions
•  Must have been directly engaged in the promotion of school and/or  community/public/ environmental  health programs
•  Must have some knowledge and capacity to train and monitor community-level hygiene personnel
•  Must have some knowledge of hygiene transformation tools – SARAR, PHAST, etc
•  Must have the ability and capacity to work with little supervision
•  Must be result oriented, analytical and innovative.
•  Must be computer-literate in  MS Word, power-point, and must have good reporting skills
