We are a fast-growing manufacturing industry and looking for an experienced Product Development Chemist (General Formulator and
Soap Maker).

Title: Product Development Chemist (General Formulator and Soap Maker)

Reports to: The Production Manager

Position Summary

• As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses in the development and preparation of natural personal care products for domestic and international markets.
• This includes analysis of beneficial effects of the ingredients honour products.
• Your ability to apply your understanding of the chemistry behind soapmaking and the properties of various ingredients to create quality products for consumers is a plus.
• The goal is to ensure high level quality products that meet international standards and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide an objective viewpoint of product development based on natural products chemistry and pharmacognosy expertise and ability to analyze scientific and commercial information
• Responsible for optimization of existing techniques and methods, and implementation of improvements, for development of natural personal care products
• Create and develop natural personal care products through utilization of innovative and improved processes, protocols and techniques.
• Create, Develop, and produce natural soaps – cold and hot process and liquid soaps of all types
• Manage the product development process from conception through small-scale laboratory, pilot plant and clinical trials, to
commercialization scale
• Responsible for writing Standard Operating Procedures and work instructions for production development and quality control.
• Write and update MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) to ensure proper safety procedures when working with chemicals.
• Prepare specifications for raw material and formulations
• Prepare samples for testing for stability, efficacy and safety
• Coordinate with external analytical labs to extend testing capabilities and manage outside testing of products
• Communicate with sales, marketing and business development teams regarding potential new products
• Utilize expertise in natural products chemistry and pharmacognosy in analysis of personal care industry standards and market trends. Study pharmacognosy and technical information relevant to the company’s competitive mission and environment
• Analysis of competitors’ products and reporting on information obtained so as to enhance product development, marketing and
business results
• Coordinate with Quality Control to ensure products comply and meet audit requirements for all applicable certifications, including nonGMO (non-Genetically Modified Organisms), GMP (Good Manufacturing Process), and Fair-Trade certifications
• Upon introduction of new or enhanced products, gather and analyze the business results of the introduction
• Maintain knowledge of state compliance parameters and keep management team informed of necessary changes.

Qualification Required & Experience

Key Requirements and Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in Plant Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry or related Field.
• 2 years experience in natural skin care formulating
• Experience and knowledge of the chemistry of soap making, including cold and hot process and liquid formulations.
• Proficient in spreadsheet, data management, record keeping.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong working knowledge of quality standards and health & safety regulations
• Ability to coach and motivate team members
• Attention to detail
