UNV Assignment Title: Project Assistant - Peace
Type of Assignment: National UN Volunteer
Project Title: Consolidating Peace in Ghana
Duration: One year
Expected Starting Date: July 2012

Brief Project Description:
In its governance and peace strategy, UNDP is conscious of the political dimensions of development, and has assessed that the capacity of national institutions to promote peace and governance will improve at the same time as the capacity of citizens to demand for its is enhanced. This strategy of simultaneous top-down and bottom-up approaches, lubricated by peace building interventions, such as dialogue, trust-building and consensus seeking, will result in effective partnerships among rights-holders and duty-bearers.

The 2012 Peace Annual Work Plan (AWP) builds on initiatives implemented under the 2006-2011 UNDAF that focused on supporting Ghana's Architecture for Peace through policy support, institutional capacity building, advocacy and the creation of platforms for dialogue. Within this context, UNDP will help institutionalize the new NPC and deepen Ghana's Peace Architecture by scaling-up support for conflict transformation strategies and tactics, while also providing advisory services and technical assistance. The current AWP is in full alignment with the UNDAF 2012-2016 thematic areas, Ghana's fourth UNDAF, that support key priorities of the government's development agenda reflected in the GSGDA. A gender and conflict prevention lens has been adopted in planning for the 2012 programme and the need to build effective partnerships and provide continuous institutional capacity development and collaboration among relevant stakeholders emphasized. This AWP recognizes the inherent link between sustainable peace and sustainable development.
