The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is working with African governments, donors, NGOs, the private sector and African farmers to significantly and sustainably improve the productivity and incomes of resource poor farmers in Africa through agricultural development targeted at resource poor farmers. AGRA has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and an office in Accra, Ghana.

AGRA is seeking to recruit an experienced and exceptional individual to fill the position of Gender Programme Officer.

The Gender Programme Officer has the role of supporting AGRA's programmes to implement gender mainstreaming in AGRA's work. The position is also linked to the promotion of gender equity within the different programs and units, i.e. the promotion of gender balance, work/life issues, harassment and a gender sensitive work environment. The Gender Programme Officer provides input, guidance and recommendations on all gender perspectives. This requires the Gender Programme Officer to understand AGRA's programs and how gender mainstreaming applies to AGRA's work.

Reporting to the Vice President - Programmes, this position is internationally recruited and will be based in Nairobi, Kenya on a three (3) year fixed-term contract.

Specific Responsibilities will include:

•   Assist AGRA management to assess and identify gender knowledge needs and gaps in AGRA's programmes
•   Develop and execute an overall strategic action plan for gender mainstreaming at AGRA in consultation with AGRA stakeholders
•   Develop and contribute to the basis of policy statements, frameworks, mandate rationale and goals of the work of gender mainstreaming at AGRA
•   Lead the establishment of a gender task force within AGRA and serve as its coordinator
•   Conduct reviews of AGRA strategies, proposals and grants and provide timely input and recommendations for gender integration and inclusion of women in the implementation of programmes and grants provided by AGRA
•   Co-ordinate training activities and develop a suite of tools for training on gender mainstreaming based on identified needs for AGRA staff, in liaison with other organizations / contractors that can contribute towards this
•   Develop and manage a set of grants to enhance gender equity in agricultural research, markets and policies complementary to AGRA's programmes
•   Represent AGRA at developmental forums and liaise with gender focal points in other institutions for events where information on gender mainstreaming may be required to leverage AGRA programmes and
•   Assist with respect to gender issues, the Monitoring and Evaluation team, in monitoring results emanating from the AGRA programme of work

Qualification Required & Experience

•   Minimum of Master's degree in Social Science (e.g. Gender and Development, Anthropology, Natural Resource Management, Developmental Studies or equivalent) or Agricultural Sciences
•   At least 7 years experience in advocacy for gender issues and evidence-based results in gender analysis and mainstreaming especially in institutions which deal with research and development
•   Significant experience with gender issues and social impacts in required with some experience in relevant socio-economic and gender analysis frameworks
•   Strong analytical ability to design, implement and evaluate gender mainstreaming options for promoting agricultural productivity growth, and
•   Excellent oral, written and multi-media communication skills in English with a limited knowledge of French being an added advantage
