The primary responsibilities of the reading specialist are to coordinate the school's reading program and help find a way of reaching low-achieving pupils.

Instruction

The reading specialist supports supplements and extends classroom teaching, and works collaboratively to implement a quality reading program that is research-based and meets the needs of students.

The reading specialist may work with the administrators and teachers, individually and collectively, to improve and
maintain reading instruction. To reach this end the reading specialist may

•   Provide instruction to students in or out of the classroom
•   Team with the classroom teacher to instruct students
•   Assist the teacher in grouping students and pacing instruction
•   Introduce or model techniques and strategies
•   Model lessons that will help students read in the content areas

Assessment

•   The reading specialist has specialized knowledge of assessment and diagnosis that is vital for developing,
implementing, and evaluating the literacy program in general, and in designing instruction for individual students.
•   He or she can assess the reading strengths and needs of students and provide that information to classroom
teachers, parents, and specialized personnel such as psychologists, special educators, or speech teachers, in order to
provide an effective reading program.
•   The reading specialists can assess the reading strengths and needs of students and provide that information to
classroom teachers, parents and specialized personnel. The specialist collaborates with the classroom teacher to use
assessment results to plan and implement an appropriate reading program for the child.

Leadership

•   The reading specialist provides leadership as a resource to other educators, parents and the community.
•   They also aid by suggesting ideas, strategies, or materials that can enhance instruction and can plan enrichment
activities and reading incentives.
•   They lead professional development workshops, model strategies or techniques for teachers and conduct
demonstrations or collaborative lessons.
•   They have a strong influence on the overall reading program and coordinate their role and the scope of their work
with the school principal.
