Oxfam, a leading non-governmental organization working on economic justice, gender justice, extractive governance and sustainable livelihoods with its Ghana Programs Office based in Accra is looking for an experienced locally-available person to join its Programmes and Campaigns team as Media and Communications Officer for a 2-year fixed term contract.

Our work in Ghana covers a variety of areas, all of them aimed at empowering people to work their way out of poverty and injustice.  Leading our work on Media and Communications and providing support to our programmes and Campaigns, you’ll play a vital role in making that happen. Primarily responsible for developing and managing media and communications strategy for the country programme with concentration on partner activities in northern Ghana, and also supporting national and regional activities on a new vibrant campaign advocating for food justice in a resource-constraint world; you’ll take on a range of other duties. You may in future manage substantive budget and grants to partners, you’ll have every chance to show us what you’re made of as you get to grips with campaigning and advocacy and write regular bulletins for staff across Oxfam and external audience.

The Media and Communications officer will be based in Accra office with frequent travels to partner locations within Ghana and outside when required.

Organised and a strong communicator, you’ll have a wide knowledge of media and communications in campaigns. And you’ll certainly be no stranger to managing complex workloads. Confident writing communications for a variety of audiences, you’ll have an eye for detail and the drive to deliver key media and communications initiatives on your own. And it’s absolutely essential that you’re fluent in English and some Ghanaian languages.

Qualification Required & Experience

•  A minimum of first degree in Social Science, Communication Studies, Development Studies or any other related field.
•  Substantial experience and understanding of journalism, relationships building with media organisations and knowledge of how to access media markets.
•  Proven ability to develop and deliver creative and successful media strategies, including through the use of social media, story gathering and rich media
•  Demonstrated information-gathering and communications capacity, including the ability to identify strong stories and present them in an appropriate and compelling way, both verbally and in writing, for a range of audiences and media.
•  Knowledge and experience of innovations in digital and social media and what this means for media and campaigning strategies.
•  Video production and editing skills.
•  Proven ability to effectively prioritise a complex workload, manage competing priorities and to work from own initiative.
•  Appreciation of the importance of relaying the experience and priorities of communities and civil society organisations.
•  Strong analytical, negotiating, networking and strategic thinking skills
•  Capacity and willingness to travel extensively within Ghana, often in areas with limited amenities and infrastructure.
•  Demonstrable and proven strong conceptual, research and analytical and writing skills.
•  Demonstrable ability to work independently, think innovatively and strategically as well as within a team.
•  High level interpersonal and diplomatic skills along with awareness of political sensitivities in different settings of Ghana.
•  Fluency in written and spoken English as well as Ghanaian languages
•  Demonstrable understanding and experience of gender and diversity issues and commitment to addressing inequalities in all the key areas of responsibility.
•  Knowledgeable and experienced in Microsoft office tools including picture manager, photo editor, power point.

Under the overall guidance of the Country Director and direct supervision of the Head of the Partnerships and Communications Cluster, the Project Communications Officer will assist the head of the cluster in managing and implementing the coordination and communications Annual Work Plan to deliver high quality outputs in communicating UNDP’s development results. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the UNDP communications officer as well as with other programme clusters, media, development partners and civil society to communicate development results. Additionally, the incumbent will work closely with the communications officer to coordinate joint events around UN days etc.

Main Tasks:

•  Ensure implementation of communication strategies focusing on achieving the following results:
1) Supporting the creation of visibility and publicity of UNDP/GOG projects;
2) Crafting sound messages and writing web articles, press releases and speeches for project related events. Assisting to coordinate and monitor work plans of the country office clusters for the development of success stories. Ensuring updated country office website in conformance to corporate dash boad requirements. Compiling photo library, press clippings as well as web based news items related to UNDP projects, and bring significant news items to the attention of UNDP senior management through the Partnerships Advisor
•  Work with the Partnerships Advisor to ensure implementation of the partnerships strategy by doing the following:
1) Assisting to produce donor communication briefs needed to develop long-term resource mobilization strategies for UNDP Ghana funded projects
2) Support organization of coordinating meetings and/or briefings for the press and media on UNDP partnerships. Coordinating the production of documentaries on UNDP/GoG, and donor funded projects. Acting as focal point and ensure the implementation of the coordination and communication Annual Work Plan

Qualification Required & Experience

Competencies:

•  Strong analytical and problem solving skills, superior network and interpersonal relationship skills and excellent writing skills and proven ability to produce quality results
•  Good presentation skills and excellent communication, planning and organizational skills

Education and Experience:

•  3 to 5 years of post-master’s relevant experience at a national or international level in corporate communications, and advocacy programmes
•  Demonstrated experience in design and implementation of organizational communication strategies and in the usage of computers and office software packages, good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems and experience in coordination and event planning and partnerships and resource mobilization

Language: Excellent command of English language (written and spoken), working knowledge of French will be an added advantage

Job Summary:

CHF International a Non-Governmental Organization is seeking experienced professionals to recruit to fill the position below for a proposal for an upcoming 5-year USAID funded project on local government capacity building, livelihood and nutrition promotion in the northern region of Ghana.

The position with CHF International in the Northern Region, Ghana, will be pending upon an award by USAID.  The position is full time; 12 months per year over the life of the program.

The Communications Officer will Coordinate all communications and media output of the region:

•  Manage all external reporting; supervise the work of assigned work group/team;
•  Manage communications needs for key stakeholders and other high level visits to the region;
•  Act as first point of contact for PR and Media particularly in emergency situations;
•  Conduct regular visits to field offices and project sites, where required, to evaluate;
•  Communication priorities, provide support to regional officers, follow-up on current issues and assess quality of reporting based on program realities.
•  S/he will coordinate and distribute the country or region’s CHF events calendar;
•  Manage the production of the CHF region’s website and submit regular updates for the CHF International webpage on that region;
•  Be in charge of the program branding and public relations strategies, success stories, pictures and videos.
•  S/he will also be responsible for the creation and implementation of the program’s media outreach strategy and will work closely with the Country press to ensure accurate coverage of programmatic activities.

Qualification Required & Experience

S/hewill report to the Chief of Party and must have:

•  Degree in Communications, Social Sciences, Information Management or equivalent;
•  At least 4 years of experience in international media relations including managing or supervising staff;
•  Proven experience of communicating information with a wide range of different –audiences;
•  Ability to develop and present information and communication products for a range of different audiences;
•  Ability to review and edit reports and other written documentation for dissemination and publication;
•  Familiar with international development, humanitarian relief, and international trade issues;
•  Ability to collect information and undertake research under potentially difficult and constraining conditions;
•  Ability to differentiate between information for internal versus external audiences;
•  Excellent business and journalistic writing skills;
•  Excellent oral communications skills;
•  Excellent graphic design and proofreading skills;
•  Proven ability to manage publications from conceptualization to completion;
•  Fluent in English written and spoken.
